However, when growing potatoes you should avoid using fresh chicken manure as it contains a lot of moisture. Also plant potatoes as fast as they sprout to avoid shoots from breaking. There are various pests that arise from using chicken manure these include white grubs and cut worms and they can be organically controlled by spraying liquid soap and recommended insecticides.
Potatoe Agronomy
Start by storing potatoes in a dark room for 3 weeks to allow sprouting. Additionally dig holes 1 metre apart, 30-50 cm deep with rows 60- 70 cm apart.
Thereafter collect chicken manure aged between 1- 2 weeks as this contains less moisture and half fill it in the holes.
Then cover the potato seedlings with a thin soil layer to allow easy germination.
Always control pesticides by spraying liquid soap or through using the recommended insecticides to ensure effective pest control.
Lastly, insecticides should be applied once every 2 weeks until harvest and also ensure to water the garden to prevent plant desiccation.
