When farmers save their seeds for the next season, they sometimes have bad quality seeds because of insects and other diseases. Therefore floating out the bad seeds make sure that you‘re seeds are usable.
Improving the seed quality is important if you want to use your own seeds. It is necessary to start your harvest with healthy seeds. You know that your seeds are attacked, when you open the container before sowing and moths and fly out. Also small insect holes are visible. Attacked or unripe seeds are usually lighter than healthy seeds and therefore easy to get rid of.
Separating good and bad
Clean the seeds by winnowing. During this you can remove any corns with holes. Afterwards you can add the seeds to water to see which seeds are unfilled and where dust and straws are. But you are not able to see and separate all of the affected seeds by just laying them in water.
To remove every bad seed you have to make the water heavier. Fill a clean container with water. Then add salt and urea. You know you put enough in, when an egg can float in the water. Put the seeds in the mixture and stir it with your hands. All bad seeds are going to float on the surface. The good seeds gather at the bottom of the container. Remove all bad seedlings and give them your poultry as feed. Then remove the good seedlings and wash them two to three times with clean water.
You can leave the saltwater in a different container and use it for watering coconut trees. If your water includes urea, you can use the mixture for your seedbed as well.
