The cassava mosaic virus disease is an important cassava disease which causes low yields. It can be recognised on the cassava leaves which have spots ranging from light green to yellow. The disease is given to the plant by the white fly. This disease cannot be cured but it can be avoided. To prevent the cassava mosaic virus disease we must use cuttings which have not been attacked by the disease. Most of all, we must plant varieties which are resistant to the disease.

Cassava is one of the main crops largely grown for both food and income for generations in Africa for farmers and processors.

Cassava mosaic disease is one of the important diseases which affect the production.

Symptoms

It is caused by the cassava mosaic virus transmitted by the white flies.

Sick plants can be identified by light green or yellow spots on the leaves. Small and deformed leaves.

The disease has no cure however can be controlled.

Disease control

Use healthy cassava cuttings from certified producers. Plant resistant cassava varieties. Practice a crop rotation to stop the disease cycle. Uproot and burn sick plants.

Grow one variety in the field at a time.

Always inspect your field for disease infestation.

Avoid using cuttings that are affected when setting up a field.
