The process of growing fish requires special techniques and this hinders its absorption by farmers however it is grown using different methods.
First of all, fish farming involves raising of fish in tanks and enclosures for food. Fish species used are tilapia, cat fish and other species. Artificial nets are built around and at bottom of each tank. Male fish attracts female fish to his nest to lay eggs which he fertilizes.
Fish growing
Eggs are harvested by use of nets and then transferred into an incubator to hatch into fries. Water is added to incubator to create sense of movement similar to that os of river system which is needed for hatching.
The tiny fish are transferred to fingerling tanks after six weeks where they are kept for 2 months during growth stage. Feed ratio is adjusted according to the growth of the fish that is to say fish is fed according to body weight ratio.
Furthermore, fish is fed 3 times a day and water quality is measured on daily basis majorly 3 times a day to avoid bottlenecks in the system.
Once fish get bigger, they are then transferred to grow up tanks until they are ready for harvesting. Fish is harvested between 6 to 8 months when they have attained 300-350g.
Finally, fish is sampled and weighed after every 2 weeks and each grow up tank is marked with birth date of the fish reared in.
