»Purpose:The purpose of this video is to understand the use of the agroforestry system and how agroforestry contributes to the fight against climate change. The video talks about how to apply agroforestry in agriculture systems and how its nowadays a major component of landscape restoration initiatives. It talks about how plants in agroforestry systems sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and when trees are cut, carbon may be retained in wood used for construction or biochar for soil amelioration. It also talks about good agricultural practices must accompany agroforestry to adapt to climate change. It talks of Nestlé’s commitment to maintaining and further developing good practices in agroforestry systems and supporting landscape management approaches.«

As a mode of improving on the sustainability of the environment, agroforestry is carried out to given the different benefits it holds.

Globally, 16% of crop lands and grass lands are under agroforestry management and a third of trees are on the farmland. Agroforestry contribute to climate change mitigation and land scape restoration.

Agroforestry establishment

As the larger the diameter of tree, the more carbon stored, all plants in agroforestry system sequest carbon dioxide from atmosphere and carbon is retained in wood used for construction of biochar for soil.

Similarly, good agricultural practices such as planting leguminous trees, use of green manure, mulching and fertilizer use must accompany agroforestry to adopt to climate change and plant trees as well as shrubs in lines on slopes and plant shade trees.

Finally, combine species that are susceptible to different pest and diseases to lower the need for pesticides. Agroforestry supports farmers for resilience.
