Tomato farmers make losses due to low prices when they produce and find the market saturated with tomatoes. In this video, we learn how minimise these losses by producing all year round.
Tomatoes are an important ingredient for cooking and can be used fresh, steamed or as a paste. Farmers often make losses, when they find a low price at the market as a result of flooding of tomatoes. Staggering production helps minimize these loses and ensures a constant supply of tomatoes. All you need is the expertise, tolerant seed varieties and accessibility to irrigation water.
Group decision
When a group of farmers decide to do staggering planting, they agree on when each of them should plant. After that, farmers use their own knowledge to do the production. When doing staggered production, irrigation of the tomatoes is important especially at flowering and fruiting. After harvesting, the group decides on the marketing strategy and if the tomatoes are to be sold at a market far away, they are harvested at the turning stage. Further more, the group also discusses each one‘s experience during production and incase prices are very low, they can opt to store the tomatoes.
