»This video gives a detailed discussion about passion fruit growing in Uganda.«

Starting and growing passion fruits is very easy as it requires simple technical steps and management practices.

Basically there are three main passion fruit varieties to mention; purple variety, yellow variety, sweet granadilla variety and giant granadilla variety. For proper disease control for organic passion fruit farmers always consult extension workers for advise. Furthermore passion fruits are greatly affected by fungal diseases such as leaf burns and stem rot that may require a strategic approach to control.

Steps to start

First obtain good quality seeds from certified dealers and transplant seedlings on a fertile well drained garden.

Additionally, space passion fruit seedlings at 3 metres by 3 metres to reduce plant nutrient competition, allow light penetration and reduce fungal disease spread.

Ensure to dig planting hole at depth of 3 feet to allow placement of the required plant nutrients at the plant base.

Management practices

Always constantly weed, irrigate field, mulch and prune the passion fruit field to ensure proper plant growth.

Furthermore at 3 metres plant height provide a net/ wire bed to allow the plant lay and produce fruits.

Also irrigate fruits and control diseases to prevent passion fruit plants from drying.

Every 7-14 days spray plants with insecticides and fungicides to effectively control pests and diseases.
