Apart from water irrigation method, mulching is also a potential method of retaining viable moisture content in the soil for the crops.
Mulch is a layer of material applied as protective barrier to top bare soil in form of plastic, fabric, straw and wood shavings. The material used depend on what is to be accomplishes however mulching improves on soil health and suppresses weeds from field.
Mulching methods
As compost is used as a blanket to top soil, mix fresh grasses with dry tree leaves and apply on seed bed while for wood chip mulches, it binds up nitrogen for some time. Use clean fine straw to mulch bed which later turn into organic to keep the soil cool with enough moisture content.
Similarly, for living mulches, they blanket soil and give secondary crops and they are obtained from cover crops while for Chop N Drop method of mulching, crops are harvested, chopped and returned as mulches to the garden.
Finally, pile mulches around plant 2 inches thick and water immediately.
