Vermiculture is the system of using earthworms to compost waste. Breeding and multiplying of worms is done to compost waste.

There are many types of earthworms depending on how they compost waste. The best earthworm to compost waste is called redworm. This is because they eat a lot of waste in day, can make compost almost instantly and they multiply very quickly. Adult earthworm lays an egg every month and hatches in a month producing 3-5 earthworms. Earthworm farming goes in hand with organic farming and farmers can grow organic crops through this compost.

Earthworm importance

Earthworms eat waste like kitchen waste, weeds and manure. Organic waste from markets can be converted to compost by using earthworms hence reducing pollution. Earthworms can also be bred and produced to be sold to to other farmers.

Organic crops grown through their compost are good and fetch better market prices too. Market for earthworms is unlimited as they can be sold locally or exported you only need certification to export.

Levels of vermiculture

The lowest level is buying 1 kg of earthworms, putting kitchen waste in a 20 litres jerrican and adding worms and this will serve a small kitchen garden. You will be able to get vermi compost and vermi liquid from it. For bigger gardens, use plastic drums and at least 2-5 kg of earthworms.

Composting period can take up to 3 months if started with 5 kg and takes longer if you start with les than 5 kg which is the second level. For third level you can use concrete or wooden beds.
