Calcium is an important nutrient in crop production and specifically it prevents blossom end rot in tomato.
Many farmers opt for calcium nitrate as a source of calcium for their crops but a calcium fertilizer can be made locally using egg shells. All you will need will be egg shells, a grinder and a container where to put the egg shells and an oven.
Procedure
Set your oven at 170 degrees and heat the egg shells for 20 to 25 minutes. Ensure that you do not over heat the eggs. This enables the shells to get dry and become hard enough to easily be crushed.
Put the dried egg shells in a grinder and grind the shells ensuring that you crush the shells very well in to powder form.
Put the crushed powder into a bag.
This acts as a most cost effective substitute for inorganic calcium nitrate but if your plants are showing signs of severe deficiency of calcium, it is advisable to use inorganic calcium nitrate.
