Fishing involves rearing aquatic animals like cat fish, tilapia, shrimps, prawns and salmon. It is a very profitable venture if practised very well by farmers.

There are different types of fish ponds that are used by farmers during fish farming these include earthen ponds, concrete ponds, tarpaulin ponds, however tarpaulin ponds are expensive and at the same time advantageous since it can be easily moved from place to place. On the other hand concrete ponds are highly advisable since they can easily be cleaned and drained.

Successful fish farming

Start by educating yourself about fish farming from established fish farm in order to have basic fish farming knowledge after thereafter decide on the location of the fish pond as this will affect the type of pond to be constructed for example earthen ponds require soils with high water table and should be established on either clay or loam soil as concrete or tarpaulin ponds require proximity to water source as they require regular water changes.

Additionally select site and check for soil type this should be clay soil since it retains water, check water pH to know whether it is acidic or alkaline and correct it if needed, to add on that after pond construction it should be treated and fertilized to protect the pond from disease causing organisms and to boost growth of fish feed.

Lastly after establishing the fish ponds ensure that pipes and covers, nets, sand bags are installed at the pond to enable filling and refilling and to protect fish against predators.
