Plantains are grown and mostly eaten as deserts. Good land preparation during establishment is vital to obtain good yield.

During land preparation, clear the bushes and strategically leave some trees to act as wind breaks incase of adverse weather. Allow the grass to dry and burn them. Virgin land has intact inherent soil fertility and hence there is no need to apply manure at planting.

Plantain management

Strategically locate your plantain near a water source so that you have water for irrigation incase need arises. Incase the area is swampy, dig drainage channels in the field. This prevents flooding of the of the field incase of excess flooding.

Three months after planting, apply poultry manure to supply nutrients.

Remove excess suckers to prevent competition which results into stunted growth. The removed suckers can be planted else where to increase on plant population.
