“Your maize is mature when the leaves and the husks start to dry and turn yellow. Start harvesting improved varieties first and end with local varieties which are more resistant to pest attacks. Dehusk your maize in the field to avoid bringing pests to your home. Properly sort your maize in the field, burn the cobs that have been attacked and store the healthy ones.“

Learning the process of harvesting maize and recognizing the time of harvest will give you a successful harvest.

The corn is ripe when the leaves and the husk start to dry and become yellow. Furthermore, the hairs at the tip of the husk start to fall down. When you press your fingers into the ripe maize, it doesn’t leave behind a pressure mark. Don’t wait to long with starting the harvest after discovering these signs, because otherwise insects could attack the maize.

Harvest process

Before harvesting the maize, your storage location and tools which are used for the process should be dry, clean and useable. Look for assistants soon enough.

If the maize is ripe you can start with the harvest. If you planted more than one sort of maize, start harvesting the improved varieties. After that, you can harvest the local varieties which are more resistant to pests.

Remove the husk directly on the field so that you don’t bring home pests. At home you should sort the maize again to make sure that the maize, which is going to be stored, is healthy. Burn every attacked corn.
