Dates are grown for their sweet taste due to the natural sugars that they contain.

The desert environment is perfect for the date trees to grow in but the trees still need water to grow. An average tree needs about 175,000 liters of water per year hence a small date field will need 20 million liters. When growing dates in the desert, you need t have a reliable source of water.

Dates cultivation

Dates do well in the desert however they need to be irrigated  to enable good plant growth. This can be done by digging channels to carry water from a river to the date palm trees. A watered date tree can produce up to 100 kgs of dates.
Before harvesting the dates, you need to assess the readiness of the dates for harvest.
Once the dates ae ready for harvest, farmers find their way to the top of the date trees.
Ripe dates are harvested to the ground.
The yellow dates are then spread in the sun to allow them to evenly get brown/ fully ripe.
