„Farmers in Guatemala explain how to grow beans in hot, lowland areas by first selecting a bean variety that is adapted to the heat. They plant the beans in the winter, and sometimes have to provide irrigation. Tthe beans can be planted alone or between the rows of maize.“

Beans are eaten world wide and can also be grown in low lands. If people have less knowledge about the production process, pests and diseases attacks them and causes less output.

Growing beans

Select seeds that are adapted to heat, disease resistant and high yielding. Planting should be done in cooler temperature from November to January to attain good harvest. Additionally, ensure irrigation of beans without splashing water on to the leaves which causes flower drop and spreads diseases. To maintain soil fertility and moisture use crop residues for high yields.

Plant in lines with open spaces, 2-3 seeds per hole to leave enough working space, reduce food competition and disease spread respectively. Lastly apply compound fertilisers for better yields and faster growth.
