Artificial Insemination (AI) is the process by which the semen is deposited inside the reproductive tract of the female by means of instruments.
AI helps to propagate superior germ plasm and prevents spread of sexually transmitted diseases. There are several materials needed like liquid nitrogen tin, frozen semen straws, long forceps pipe, scissors, thermometer, warm water. Additionally ensure no gap between straw end cut and the sheath during the process to avoid part of the semen from remaining in the sheath. Oestrus should be determined by clinical or gynaecological examination.
Steps to follow
Start by identifying the bull number from the tag attached on canister, then lift the concerted canister up to the neck, pick the straw with forceps as fast as possible and shape them to remove excess nitrogen.
Thereafter strictly follow temperature and time when putting the straw in warm water to achieve high semen recovery rate.
After thawing gently wipe straws to remove water however, water should be lethal to spermatozoa.
Then slide sheet over the gun and tightly secure the gun with 0- ring. Ensure wearing protective gloves, lubricants and properly widen perineum and valval area to avoid infection on the gun.
Additionally, open the valve eclipse and insert the gun at 30- 40 angle to avoid urethral opening. Pass the gun gently and fix it at the external walls of the cervix, slowly guide it into the cervix till it reaches the internal uterus walls.
After AI Massage the clitoris ten times to get favourable results and lastly insemination should be done at proper oestrus times to obtain high conception rate.
