The level and type of technology determines the quantity and quality of products produced in a given period of time on the farm.
Being the most common method of artificial insemination of cattle, rectal technique require basic skills for about 3 days practice under professional instruction and supervision. Additional proficiency and confidence come with practice on your own.
Technology application
First step is to restrain by running animal to be inseminated into narrow shoot which should be done prior to put semen in the gun and prevent other animals from interfering the process. Use left hand to manipulate reproductive tract, right hand to manipulate insemination gun and avoid surprising animal when approaching it for insemination.
Continue by raising tail with right hand and massage rectum with lubricating glove on left hand and then place tail back side and put fingers together in pointed fashion and insert hand in rectum up to wrist. Gently wipe vulva with paper towel to remove excess manure and with left hand, make a fist and press down directly on top of vulva.
Additionally, remove A.I gun from protective environment ant insert it into vagina at an upward angle of 30 degrees. With gun 6-8 inches inside vagina, slide it until it contacts external portion of cervix. For successful insemination, always know location of gun tip by use of palpating using hand. Remove all manure to avoid palpating interference and then keep open hand flat against flow of rectum . Relax constriction range of cervix by using 2 fingers to massage back and forth.
Locate cervix, straighten it using wrist and remove fluids then slide gun forward and repeat the process. Grasp external opening to cervix with thumb on top and fore fingers underneath to close fornix on top and bottom locate gun tip up to cervical opening by bending and twisting the cervix. When all ranges are passed, rotate glow hand until it lies on top of cervix and raise finger and slowly deposit half of semen. Re check placement then slowly deposit the remaining half of semen.
Push plunger slowly to pour semen into uterine body and after, slowly pull gun from reproductive tract. Finally check gun tip for signs of blood, infection or semen leakage inside sheath and make notes with vet for references then remove sheath from gun and hold it in glove hand. Remove glove starting from upper of arm , remove air from glove, tie it at the open end and dispose off. Clean and return gun to proper store.
