Availability of space is one of the challenges faced by fish farmers to establish fish ponds. Space/ land is available in rural areas which are far from the markets. Lack of power in the farm for pumping the water and security is another challenge where the insecurity status is high and fish farms are often robbed.
Other challenges
Bad road network which makes the movement of fishes from the farm to the market hard which increases the overall cost of production.
Breed of fingerlings where a lot of breeds have been affected and they do not produce good returns. Water source where most water sources are not suitable for catfish.
High cost of feeding where quality feed is expensive and there is a continuous increase in the price of feed. Due to this, farmers have reduced on the amount of stock.
Diseases which result from poor feeding. Poor feeding causes the fish to be more susceptible to diseases.
Handling of fish especially in transporting fingerlings from one place to another. Some farmers lose a lot of fingerlings while transporting them from the point of buying them to the fish ponds.
