It is normal to have fishes of different sizes grow at different rates even when the fingerlings were bought from the same source and the fingerlings given the same treatment in terms of medium of growth and feed but these can be reduced to the bare minimum.
Causes and management
Over stocking of fish causes stress to the fish and the rate of growth of the fish is different hence there is need to stock the ponds at the correct stocking density.
Feed sizes. Giving fish feed that’s bigger than the required size causes only the bigger fish sizes to eat and grow and the smaller ones won’t and this increases the irregularity of the fish hence need to give the fish feed of appropriate feed size.
Lack of proper sorting. Its common practice that some farmers do not sort their fish and leave them to grow in one pond up to harvest. Usually fish grows at different rates and if not sorted, the margin f the difference in sizes would be big.
Quality of feed. If the feed you are feeding your fish lack any of the essential nutrients for growth, the rate of growth of the fish would be irregular.
Farm management. Adequate knowledge of farm management will help reduce on the irregularity of the fish.
Breed of fish. When you buy a bad breed of fish then the irregularities in fish sizes will be high.
