»It takes a few minutes for a fruit fly to find a suitable spot on the mango and inject her eggs under the skin of the fruit. But even in that short time, the weaver ants will have either chased her away or have captured her. Their scent also helps. When other insects detect the scent of weaver ants, they prefer to stay away.«

Weaver ants play greater roles in reducing losses caused by fruit flies through several ways.

Since fruit flies are terrible insect pests that use their pointed tip to lay eggs under the fruit skin which hatch into worms causing fruit drop. However care should be taken to differentiate the harmless acid released by weaver ants from the harmful black spots caused by fruit flies as well as ensuring early picking of fruits to reduce spoilage

Ants protect fruits

Through being active during day time thus chasing and capturing fruit flies, through feeding on fruit fly maggots as ants move down on ground in search for food also through communication and production of pheromones with scents which scare fruit flies.

Alternatively combine weaver ants with other control measures such as fruit fly traps, collecting and destroying fallen fruits to effectively eliminate fruit flies from the garden and increase the yields.

However farmers should apply harsh on skin to prevent harm since it does not allow ants stick on skin.
