»Scientists in Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization have developed ten pasture and fodder Technologies, Innovations and Management Practices to support production of beef, sheep, goat and camel in Kenya range lands to mitigate effects of climate change.«

Pasture and fodder management is the backbone of livestock keeping and has a lot of opportunities. Training on this is provided by KSAP programme for service providers from Marsabit and Isiolo counties in Kenya.

For commercial pastoralism, one must have skills and knowledge on fodder and pasture management. In addition, strategies on how they can get pasture and fodder throughout the year is also required. Training on establishment methods, harvesting and estimation of biomass helps the trainees to be able to assist farmers in estimating how much to be expecting at the end of the season.

Pasture improvement

Natural pasture improvement is the reintroduction of more valuable species needed in these arid and semi arid areas. This is done because of the depleting bank seeds and is brought about by occurrence of floods and wind erosion which carry away the seeds.

Cost benefit ratio basics is carried out for all these technologies given to farmers and the training trainers on how to explain to farmers in the most simplest way for them.

More solutions

Pastoralist farmers find it difficult to get rid of their animals due to various factors like drought hence, training introduces them to ways of not having to sell all cattle by increasing their feed reserves through storage of hay hence they do not lose cattle in such conditions.

Furthermore, this helps in increasing their production since animals survive incase of such situations hence reducing the losses they could have incurred.
