To sort the fingerlings, first, open the outlet pipe to drain out the water and fill water into a bucket. Collect fingerlings from the pond into the bucket carefully ensuring that you don’t stampede the fingerlings.
Sorting catfish
Sort the fingerlings into their respective different sizes of big, medium, and small while putting them in different containers. After separating them, put the fingerlings in different ponds.
In case you don’t have enough ponds, put the big and medium-sized fingerlings in the same pond but separate and put the small fingerlings in a separate pond.
Sorting is important because tiny fingerlings are always prey to the bigger fingerlings.
After sorting the fish, even after putting back the fingerlings into the pond, still, their rate of growth will be different and you would need to again sort them again at a later date.
As you are sorting the fish, fill the pond again with water so that you can transfer the fish back into the pond after sorting.
Before transferring the fish back into the pond, squeeze bitter leaf into the pond because it acts as an anti-stress.
Give the fish an interval of about 20 minutes and start feeding them again.
Advantages of sorting
Paves way for the smaller fish to grow, preventing them from getting stunted.
Reduces cannibalism because fishes are cannibalistic in nature.
Gives a farmer an avenue to recount their fish.
