Weeds are one of the hindrances to agricultural productivity but these can be controlled using low-cost, homemade environmentally friendly herbicides.

Weeds not only make your garden look a nuisance but also cause huge damage to the crops. These can be controlled using baking soda. Pour hot water onto the weeds and then spread the baking powder onto the weeds. You can as well dissolve baking soda in water, shake well, and spray on weeds. Baking flour may change your soil PH.

Vinegar is also effective in killing weeds. Acetic acid is the active ingredient in the vinegar that kills weeds hence vinegar with between 5 to 20% of acetic acid is effective in killing weeds. Add one teaspoon full of liquid soil in a liter of vinegar, shake well, and spray onto the weeds using a spray bottle.
Table salt. This can be used by pouring the salt directly onto the weeds or making a solution of one cup of salt into two cups of water and letting it boil. Spray the boiling solution directly onto the weeds.
Newspaper. Cover the weeds with a few layers of newspaper.
Boiling water. Pour boiling water directly onto the crop.
Flame and steam. This method uses flame and steam torches. After rain or watering, light the torch and burn the water on the crops. This will eventually kill the weeds.
Oil. Mix any biodegradable oil with soap and spray on the weeds. Neem oil works both as a herbicide and a pesticide.
Mulch. Cover your garden with a nice layer of mulch as this helps kill the weeds.
