As an invention and innovation from different farmers, organic coating of cereal seeds improves on the crop productivity from a given area.
Given that rain water, organic matter and nutrients concentrate where plants need them, farmers sow seeds in shallow pits with compost manure however, crops can be affected by stagnant water, birds and insects.
Seed treatment
Because farmers treat seeds with harmful chemicals, they cause healthy problems to them selves. However, farmers change shape and colour of seeds to prevent pests by coating them with slurry and cow dung mixed with a mixture of clay, compost, water and ash. By coating seeds, only 3kg of sorghum are needed per hectare compared to 6kg of un coated ones.
Similarly, for 1kg of seed, 4kg of clay is needed together with 2kg compost and 1kg of ash which is in very fine fine dust like material. Pound clay, compost and ash into powder and put seeds in basin or calabash and sprinkle water over it to moisten it and mix pounded ingredients or add them one by one to test the seed.
Continue by shaking basin a little to coat seeds all over and again sprinkle some water over seeds and add more powder over moist seed. Shake basin for 3 minutes until all seeds are fully coated and place coated seed on tarpaulin to dry and sow them a day after drying. Sow them before the first rains given that coated seeds are easy to handle.
Finally, for many seeds use mechanical seeds machine.
