„Onions need rich, fertile soil. Only grow onions once in 3 years in the same field. Plant the onions on raised beds, especially in the rainy season. Transplant when the onions are about 6 weeks old. Plant the onions 10 centimetres apart. By taking good care of your onions, the onions will take good care of you.“

Onions have fragile shallow roots. Onion field require fertile loose soils both in sunny and rainy seasons. They require field preparation practices and care for seedlings for increased returns.

For better yield select suitable field, prepare beds and properly transplant.

Field preperation

Select fertile land rested 3 years without onions. However avoid sand and clay soils due to less fertility and loosen the soil by enriching soil fertility Lastly dont plant on clay low lands in rainy seasons to avoid root rot. Irrigate field when rain is scarce to cool soil temperatures and raise the plant bed with 1 metre wide for proper drainage and enough working space. Additionally loosen the soil and add manure for root development and level plant bed for proper root development.

Care for seedlings

Reduce watering before transplanting to increase plant strength, water plants and use proper tool when transplanting to avoid damaging roots. Ensure transporting seedling in wet bags to keep them fresh and make a hole at proper spacing for shoot and root development.

Water plants after transplanting to control plant drying weed and apply fertilisers between plant lines to control competition and increase soil fertility respectively. Conclusively add aged organic matter to boost soil health.
