Sugarcane is one of the crops produced by farmers on a large scale especially in sugar processing areas.

During the harvesting of sugarcane for processing or consumption, sugarcane tops are usually cut off and disposed off as waste. The sugarcane tops have carbohydrates (sugars) which are vital in building of muscles in animals especially in feedlot systems. In feedlot system, animals are put together and maximally fed while minimizing movements that lead to loss of calories.

Ensiling sugarcane tops

To make silage from the sugarcane top, the tops are chopped into small pieces using a machine. The pieces can either be mixed with molasses or compacted alone into a polythene.

The polythene is then covered and then the silo covered with soil.

Even with small land, you can carry out production. When you have a chopping machine, you can chop any plant for as long as it is not toxic and feed it to the animals.

After ensiling, you can get the sugarcane tops silage from the silage bag and feed it to the animals and animals love them because they are palatable.
