Before you start a pig production business, there are some basics that you need to consider.
To start pig production, you need land but since people are not comfortable with pigs, you need to look for a place that is not within a residential area. Build the structures that have a shade and the roof and pens of different sizes. The small pens are for single pigs each while large pens are occupied by multiple pigs.
Other considerations
Water is essential. It is important that you have a borehole because you cannot run a pig unit with bought water.
If possible, have accommodation for your support staff for close supervision of the pigs.
Pigs are a good converters of food. You can feed them on waste like waste from the brewery, kitchen waste like peelings and vegetable wastes from vegetable markets.
Pigs‘ rate of reproduction is high and have a gestation period of 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days. After delivery, you can let the piglets suckle for 4 weeks and wean them after.
The market for pigs is segmented. You can sell after weaning them off, the mature pigs or the pork itself.
