»In spite of the best preventative measures, broken needles can happen. NEOGEN®’s Ideal® D3™ Detectable Needles have the highest detection rate of any type of needle found in packing and processing plants. When needles break, it is important that packers are able to detect them. This Pork Avenue lesson features Drs. Seth Krantz and Sarah Probst Miller and covers some tips on proper Detectable Needle Use. To see more lessons like this, subscribe to «

The health, quality and quantity of the livestock on the farm is determined by the level of sanitation, disease prevention and pest control.

As injections are necessary for treatment administration of pigs to prevent diseases, choose a detectable needle which is red when treating or vaccinating and make sure the needle is the right size for the age of pig injected.

Needle handling

First, the required needle to treating the pig is 18-20 gauge for baby pigs and 16-18 gauge for nursing pigs. Put the needle on the syringe and properly link the syringe to the medicine or vaccine depending on what is given.

Similarly, properly restrain the pig being injected and inject the pigs always behind the muscle of the ear in the neck and change needle to maintain cleanliness and sharpness to reduce risks of infections. Take measures to retreat any dropped needles and if needles break off in pigs, follow farm protocol to retreat them.

Finally, properly dispose off used needle in a container.
