To cultivate green peas, choose a well drained and fertile soil rich in organic mater with slightly acidic to neutral ph. Remove any weeds, stones or debris from the area as they can hinder the growth of the peas. Select good quality seeds from a reputable supplier considering factors like disease resistance, growth habit and maturity period.
Planting green peas
Sow the seeds directly into the prepared soil. Plant the seeds at a depth of about 2 to 3 inches spacing them at around 18 to 24 inches between rows.
Watering and fertilization. Keep the soil consistently moist especially during the flowering and pod filling stages but avoid over watering since peas are susceptible to root rot.
Apply a balanced fertilizer of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
Pest and disease management. Regularly monitor for any signs of pests or diseases. Common pests include aphids, weevils and caterpillars. Use organic or inorganic chemicals to control crop pests and diseases.
Harvesting. Harvesting begins when the pods are well filled but still tender. After harvesting, store the peas in a cool place immediately to preserve the freshness of the peas.
