Germination testing is very important as it helps farmers to determine the viability of seed, seeding rate and time saving therefore always inquire about guarantee gemination rate when buying seeds.
Germination test should be conducted two weeks before sowing seeds if the percentage of germinated seeds is 85% seeds are very good, if 84% seeds germinate they are good and below 60% they are not good for planting.
Steps
Acquire and prepare the land by clearing bushes.
Mark out an area of 7ft by 7ft for easy care and management.
Clear off weeds on marked area and leave them on soil for water retaining for seed germination.
Till soil to make it loose for seeds to easily emerge.
Water the plot every 2 days sufficiently and protect the field to ensure reliable results.
Take results on 6 – 7 day when seeds have uniformly germinated.
Count germinated seeds, calculate and interpret results if 85% germinate, plant 2 seeds per hole, if 84% plant 3 seeds per hole and if below 60% the seeds are bad.
