Honey harvesting using a flow hive is a process, which needs to be done precisely to get the best produce without causing any harm to the bees.

To harvest honey using a flow hive you need a jar, tube, a flow key and a bee veil or a bee suit if you are new to honey harvesting until you are comfortable around your bee hive.

Accessing the Hive

Access the flow frames and make sure the frames are mostly kept or fully kept to know the honey is ready  and will keep without fermenting. Always make sure the hive is 2.5degrees or more slight backwards for easy honey drainage. Put the core flute slider in the top position, remove the tool access cover and take out the upper and the lower caps.

The tube is placed in the honey leak back point and a jar below the tube. The flow key is used to turn the handle by placing it in the lower slot, the jar fills in approximately 7 mins – 4hrs depending on its thickness. The honey is usually warm as the bees keeps the hive at 35 degrees. The jar is covered using a piece of netting,  tube jar, container or a plastic kitchen cling wrap if the bees get hungry.

Post-harvesting practices

After the jars are full make sure to reset the combs to their original positions using the flow key, so as the bees can continue making honey and that the caps can fit. The caps should also be returned and the trough cleaned for next time.
