Miscarriages are one of the challenges affecting cattle, keeping in business and are caused by a number of factors.
Anything that causes discomfort to the animal causes miscarriages and these include; Many males disturbing pregnant goats cause stress to the pregnant and can run to miscarriage. Diseases like brucellosis and clostridium can also cause miscarriage. Another reason is if the goat pen is poorly ventilated and when the exercising area is too small.
Prevention
Miscarriages caused by diseases can be prevented by vaccination. When animals are between 2 to 4 months pregnant, vaccinate for clostridium and for brucellosis when the animal has just given birth. Vaccinating for brucellosis when the animal is pregnant sometimes causes miscarriages.
When animals are pregnant, do not allow them to move longer distances especially those that are 3 months pregnant.
Feed the pregnant animals enough (steaming up) but when they are 4 months pregnant, reduce on the supplementation to prevent the kid from growing too fat for easy kidding.
If miscarriages happen abruptly, give the animals long acting oxytetracycline and multi vitamins weekly until they kid again.
