»Community Forests Pemba‘s Agroforestry expert Ali Hamad discusses how to maintain your agroforest system with information on how to care for your crop and identify issues like pest and disease«

Agroforestry involves growing trees with other crops on the same piece of land. This ensures proper land utilization, increased crop output per unit area and more income generation.

However, when replacing failed tree seedlings this should be done in one week for uniform growth of the trees and also timely weed to ensure more nutrients in soil to facilitate proper crop growth. Additionally, irrigation should be done using drip system as this ensures efficient utilization of water.

Management practices

Always, replant trees in gaps with seedlings that failed to germinate.

Ensure proper spacing for proper plant growth and this should be done depending on the tree specie.

Furthermore, timely weed the field to remove unwanted crops and ensure proper plant growth.

Also thin excess crops 2 weeks after planting to enhance growth of the remaining crops.

Additionally, mulch the field and around the crops to protect the garden from direct sunshine and soil erosion.

Then irrigate the field using drip system in dry periods to prevent plants from drying out.

Lastly, inspect the field regularly to easily spot problems and quickly take appropriate measures.
