The smell of pigs on a farm can be unbearable but it does not have to be the case.
In the bid to reduce the smell on a pigs farm, site selection is important. When selecting a site, consider the distance from nearby homes, public facilities, number of pigs you are intending to rear, facility design, management, prevailing wind, topography and land use.
Piggery sty design
In designing of the building, there are considerations you have to make. If you are constructing new facilities, consider a system that allows routine removal of wastes at least every 7 days. The wastes can be taken to a nearby pit that is always covered. If you are remodelling existing facilities, remember that that smooth interior surfaces are easier to clean and slanted floors tend to stay dry. You can also always keep the floor dry by repairing leaking nipples and maintaining waterers at appropriate height.
Piggery management practices
Pig diet manipulation and feed additives. You can reduce the smell of pigs by giving the pigs good quality drinking water that is low in sulphates and nitrates, feeding the pigs on proper ground or pelleted feed which enhances digestibility of feeds and helps reduce nitrogen excretion by 20 to 24%.Use of wet feeding ie giving the pigs feed together with water at a ratio of 3:1 with water being 3 and feed being 1; this reduces water and feed spillage.
Proper feed handling. Adjust the feeders to reduce feed loss. Excess feed spillage adds unnecessary nutrients to manure and this causes odours.
Proper disposal of caucus/ dead pigs. Remove them at most 24 hours after death. Remove them and burry them in carefully selected sites.
Having proper drainage where all the water used in the cleaning the pig sty collects.
