Before planting a date tree, ensure that you plant it in an area where it gets direct sunlight, and in a place that is spacious enough so that the tree can grow large enough.
Considerations at planting
Dig a planting hole that is 3 feet deep and 3 feet in diameter in a place that has good drainage. To test whether the soil has good drainage or not, pour water in the hole and if it doesn’t drain in 24 hours, the the soil doesn’t have good drainage.
Dig a hole that is bigger than the container containing the plant.
When digging the plant, separate the top soil from the subsoil.
Mix the top soil with compost as this is what will be used to fill back the hole after planting.
Seedling planting
Start by filling back with soil mixed with compost.
Don’t plant the seedling too deep.
Remove the seedling from the potting bag or container ensuring minimal disturbance to plant roots.
Insert the seedling into the planting hole and fill up the hole with the remaining top soil mixed with compost.
Add compost around the seedling and water.
