Grape is an important commercial fruit crop of the world, with great market demand and many medical benefits. It is also a source of minerals like calcium and vitamins like B.
Grape farming is low cost, low labour and high profit. Grapes are generally used for raw eating and for making different products such as jam, jelly, raisins, juice, vinegar, wines, seed oil, grape seed extracts etc. Grapes are grown in temperate and tropical climates and perform well where there is little or no rain at the grapes‘ ripening time. Usually, dry weather during flowering and ripening is preferred for high-quality grape production. Regions having heavy rainfall or hail storms are not suited for grape cultivation.

Grape Cultivation

Grapes are grown by planting rooted cuttings or root stocks and can be planted immediately after purchasing. Grapes prefer well drained loam to sandy loam soil, a pH of 6.5– 8.5 and good organic matter. Pits are dug depending on the variety and planting method used and are filled with a mixture of FYM and top soil and watered after planting. Balanced nutrition and chemical, organic and bio fertilizers are essential for good crops.

Crop Care

Adequate irrigation is very important for grape production and should be done after pruning, after fruit set, when the rainfall is insufficient, or the soil gets extremely dry.
Pruning should be done every year when the vines are dormant. Controlling weeds and pests, and diseases is important for healthy crops.
