Cantaloupe melon farming is profitable business in the world business with low investment and high profit. Dry and warm climate is most suitable, fertile sandy loam and silt clay musk is the best.
Generally the cantaloupe melon is long shaped, however, some species are round, raw fruit colour greenish which can be cooked and eaten as vegetables. Cantaloupe melon fruit ripe colours yellow with a sweet aroma. The fruit weight can range from 1 to 4 kg. Land must be cultivated then prepared for farming. During the cultivation of land, 15 to 20 kgs dung manure should be applied in every hectare. Every row should be dug 1.30 feet wide and 1.30 deep hole. Sowing and planting
The hole should be filled with a mixture of 10 kgs rotten cow dung and 150 grams of TSP fertilizer with soil. The seeds are sown from November to February depending on the species.
The seeds are wet in water for 24 hours. Sample the seeds after sowing four to five seeds in every hole then 10 to 12 days of planting. Keep two healthy and vigorous plants, the rest will have to be lifted. Apply 29 kgs Urea and 23 kgs of mop fertilizer around every hectare land.
Irrigation and harvesting
Cantaloupe melon can be tolerance to drought. Irrigation should be done during dry season for good yield. Water at the root of the tree is not stored, excessive water on the tree can lead to rotting disease. Straw should be spread in the fields for which the fruit cannot be rotated, if there is excessive fruit leaving four to five fruits per tree, all other fruits should be pruned.
Sex pheromone traps can be used to curb melon flies. At harvesting, fruits should be carefully transported.
