Vermicompost tea is a natural liquid fertilizer made by soaking vermicompost in water. Vermicompost is the nutrient-rich worm castings produced when earthworms decompose food scraps, also known as earthworm excreta.

Natural Fertilizer

Often referred to as black gold, vermicompost is a superior natural fertilizer that significantly improves soil and plant health. It boasts an impressive nutrient content, containing approximately 2 times more calcium, 5 times more nitrogen, and 7 times more phosphorus and potassium compared to regular soil or kitchen compost. The abundance of microbial activity in vermicompost is a key factor contributing to its effectiveness. This richness comes from a powerful combination of enzymes and beneficial symbiotic bacteria derived from the digestive systems of the worms. As a result, it enriches the soil with healthy bacteria and fungi, making essential nutrients readily available to plants.

When applying vermicompost for soil drenching, there’s no need for dilution. However, if you choose to spray it, it’s advisable to dilute it with water at a 1:1 ratio.

Preparing Vermicompost Tea

To prepare vermicompost tea, you’ll need water, jaggery, molasses, or brown sugar, vermicompost, and a cotton cloth. Take 20 liters of water in a plastic container and add 100 grams of jaggery, which acts as a source of nutrients to support microbial growth during fermentation. Allow the jaggery to dissolve completely, which typically takes about 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, place 500 grams of vermicompost into a cotton cloth and securely tie it.

Once the jaggery is fully dissolved, submerge the vermicompost bag or tied cotton cloth into the water. Let it steep for a maximum of 24 hours, occasionally squeezing the bag to ensure all water-soluble nutrients are infused into the water. Continue to mix the water to provide oxygen for the aerobic bacteria to develop and multiply, resulting in millions of beneficial bacteria. The purpose of vermicompost tea is to transfer microbial biomass and soluble chemical components to be applied to plant surfaces or the soil.

It’s essential to use the vermicompost tea solution entirely and avoid storing it, as microbial activity will deplete over time. Prepare only the amount needed for immediate use and apply it within a day once the fermentation process is complete

Sequence from Sequence to Description
00:0000:18Introduction
00:1900:59Vermicompost tea is a natural liguid fertilizer made from soaking vericompost in water. Vermicompost is the worm castings which is being secreted by the earthworms by decomposing the food scraps i.e. earthworms excrete is vermicompost is also defined as the black gold as its a natural fertilizer which enhances soil and plant health.
01:0002:26Preparing vermicompost tea you need water, jaggery or molasses or brown sugar, vermicompost and a cotton cloth. For 20litres of water which should be in a plastic container always we will add 100gms of jaggery whose purpose is to feed the microbes basically it acts as a source of nutrients for microbial growth while fermenting and let it rest for 10-15 minutes to completely dissolve meanwhile putting 5000gms of virmicompost into a cotton cloth.
02:2703:32Vermiompost is preferred to homemade kitchen compost because its a 2 times more calcium, 5times more nitrogen and 7times more phosphorus and potassium than regular soil or kitchen compost. Virmicompost contains a lot of microbial activities which refers to its powerful combination enzymes and good symbiotic bacteria which comes from the worms digestive system adding healthy bacteria and good fungi to soil which in return makes nutrients available to the plants.
03:3305:00Place the vermicompost bag/well tied cotton cloth into the water when the jaggery is completely dissolved steeping for a maximum of 24hrs squeeze the bag from time to time so that all the nutrients that are water soluble are added to the water. Keep mixing the water so that oxygen will be sent into the water helping the aerobic bacteria present to develop and multiply into millions of beneficial bacteria the importance of vermicompost tea is to transfer microbial biomass and soluble chemical component applied to the plant surfaces or onto the soil.
05:0106:08Compared to using vermicompost, vermicompost tea is inexpensive. It is also a way of preparing a solution which acts as a glucose solution which immediately boosts the plants as well as improve the soil structure and the solution is used once it has turned into brown in color.
06:0907:12Summary
07:1308:32Always use the solution completely and not store it because the the microbial activity will be depleted in the solution so once you prepare whatever amount, you have complete it one day it has completed fermenting. When soil drenching it is not required to dilute it but while spraying you dilute it with water on a 1:1 ratio, the major advantage of spraying is that it creates a coat on the leaf and acts as bio-pesticide by improving the immune system of the the plant which casts away pests from eating plant leaf, fruit or flowers.
