Drumstick is a delicious and nutritious super food in the world. Drumstick cultivation is the best business for farmers because it is easy and more profitable with less labour and less cost.
Every part of the drumstick is useful. Drumsticks young seed pots and leaves are used as vegetables. Tender leaves and sticks have a high amount of protein, carbohydrates, vitamin A, vitamin C and minerals. In addition to sticks and leaves, flowers of drumstick are valued ingredients of food that are not only tasty but nutritious too. Each part is used as medicine. Drumstick farming has been economically profitable for a long time because one gets drumsticks for many years.
Climate and soil requirements
Drumstick is a fast growing drought resistant tree. Hot and humid climate is suitable for growth and dry climate for flowering. A temperature of 25° to 30°c is suitable for flowering in drumstick. It can be grown in a variety of soils but loamy sandy loam soils are better suited. Soil PH should be 6.2 – 7.
Drumstick can be propagated from seed and also from branches. Put soil and organic manure in 2:1 ratio in poly packets. Put 2 seeds in each packet under the shade. Water them regularly.
Planting
Germination takes place after 8-10 days. After 30-35 days, seedlings are ready for planting in the mainland. Deep ploughing is done for drumstick cultivation. Pits measuring 1ft by 1ft at a distance of 2.5m is prepared during summer months. On the offset of monsoon the seedlings are planted.
Seedlings prepared by vegetative propagation also can be planted in the pits. Timely and proper weeding at the initial stages of growth is needed.
Care
Seedlings raised from seed need to be pruned when plants reach a height of about 3ft. This helps in branching of the plants.
Water requirement is less for these plants, hence this plant is capable of giving yields in drought condition also but to a lesser extent. Proper irrigation leads to more yields.
