Being a lucrative business in agriculture, the quality and quantity of quail products obtained from quail farming is determined by the production technology used.
Quail meat and eggs are of excellent quality than other poultry eggs from other poultry as they contain more protein, phosphorous, iron, vitamins A , B1 and B2. Quails can be reared in yard, corner of house or on hose roof.
Quail management
As quail farming provide income and nutrition, they are a source of employment which require low cost, less space, food and time. There is high demand for quail products once commercially reared through proper planning and training.
Similarly, ways of rearing quail birds include on the floor under deep litre system and cage system where in deep litre system, mud, sand, ash and wood powder is used as litre on floor. Spread 5-6 inches waterers in house and dont wet the litre.
Put cages after 2 weeks to gain good body weight and provide space of 6*1 inches and arrange cages up to 6 on top. There can be 4-5 cages in row and make bottom cage with wood to clean droppings easily and place feed troughs in front of cage. Continue by providing balanced feeds to keep quails healthy and productive. Chick feed should contain 27% and 22%-24% of protein to adult feed and feed quails 30-35g daily to quails at 6 months of age.
Additionally, 14-16 hours of light are required daily to increase desire of egg production and fertility. For males which dont lay eggs, provide light for 8 hours daily and keep males and females quails together to lay eggs. For egg fertility, collect eggs for hatching 4 days after keeping females to one male and always maintain water, feed and temperature for chicks which is 95 degrees Fahrenheit in first week 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the second week. This temperature is reduced to 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the third week and eventually 60 degrees in the fourth week.
Provide water mixed with glucose to birds which are brought to the brooder in 24 hours and finally take care and mange quails properly by preventing diseases as chicks dont tolerate weather and temperature changes as well.
